Developing The Template
In this phase, data are gathered and prioritized. This includes: findings from the Excellence Assessment report; culture survey results; environmental scan information; any requirements from government or accrediting councils; trend extrapolations etc. All this is done in preparation for the Corporate Planning Workshop.
A workshop facilitated by the consultant and attended by the executive team and representation from management and staff is conducted. The consultant uses a series of exercises and tools to facilitate the emergence of each of the planís elements.
The consultant takes the workshop outputs, formats them on disk into a Corporate Integrated Business Plan and returns the draft plan to the client for critique.
Alignment: At the Corporate Level
In the Corporate Plan the mission defines the unique contribution that the organization makes to the world. It is the vision that is the most pivotal and compelling element. If the vision is carefully written it can pull people together and inspire commitment!
It is from the vision that the priorities emerge. These three or four key directions become the pillars around which all strategies (corporate level) and tactics and activities (local level) will align.
Metrics: The Score Card
During the Integrated Business Planning process, metrics systematically emerge. At the corporate level we recommend a maximum of 20 metrics, each aligned around a priority. Two-year targets for each metric are set. Study of key competitors and benchmark companies provide insight into target setting.
Regular monitoring of these vital few metrics against targets will be the key to success.
Building Knowledge
Once the Corporate IBP is in place, it is now time to turn attention to training that will support the planning process. Our training is built around core competencies such as: strategic thinker; team builder; innovation promoter, etc.
We believe that Leaders need to learn how to nurture a work environment that promotes alignment, communication, continuous improvement and trust.
To assist leaders we recommend training selected staff members who, in addition to their regular duties, become in-house Advisors. These individuals will share their knowledge and support the Integrated Business Planning process throughout the organization.
To achieve total alignment, the Staff also need to acquire skills that will allow them to participate in planning and be effective team members and problem solvers.
